MARCH

Tariffs & Trade Wars

From rising geopolitical tensions to shifts in supply chains, trade policy continues to shape the global economy in ways that affect businesses, governments, and consumers alike.

You've probably heard the term tariff in the news, especially when discussions about trade tensions come up. A tariff is simply a tax placed on imported goods. Governments use tariffs to make foreign products more expensive, which can help domestic industries compete with international producers. For example, if a tariff is placed on imported steel, companies within the country producing steel may gain a competitive advantage because imported steel becomes more expensive.

However, tariffs also come with trade-offs. While they can protect domestic industries, they can also increase costs for businesses that rely on imported materials, leading to higher prices for consumers.

So why do governments still use tariffs? Policymakers may argue that tariffs protect key industries, respond to unfair trade practices, or strengthen national security in strategic sectors. At the same time, critics argue that tariffs reduce efficiency, raise prices, and can provoke retaliation from trading partners.

This debate between protecting domestic industries and supporting free trade is one of the central questions in international economics, and it’s something we’ll be exploring throughout the month.

Over the next few weeks, EconUnited will be posting content about how tariffs affect supply chains, why trade wars start, and how trade policy impacts everyday consumers. We’ll also be sharing short explainers and polls on our social media to hear your thoughts!
